Chapter Fourteen

‘I thought you’d gone.’ Sylvie frowned when everyone trooped into the kitchen once again.

‘Yes, I’m sorry but your daughter and my son are behaving most peculiarly and not allowing me to go home.’

‘We can’t!’ Robbie said, exasperated.

‘Stop being so ridiculous. I’m going through that front door this instant. I’ve a pie to go into the oven, a pot of potatoes to boil, and a head of lettuce to wash. Your father will have nothing to eat,’ she said, almost in tears as she dashed into the hall.

‘Our house isn’t out there!’ Robbie called after her.

‘Give it up, Robbie,’ Jack said, tousling Robbie’s hair. ‘I don’t know what you’re playing at but it’s time to stop.’ He turned to Sylvie. ‘I’m so sorry about your house. Is there anything I can do to help?’

Sylvie put a hand over her mouth and shook her head. Jack said ‘Sorry’ once more, awkwardly, and followed his mother out of the front door. Beth and Robbie found them standing at the gate, staring into the street. ‘This doesn’t make sense,’ Isabelle said faintly.

Jack followed her index finger, which was pointing at a BMW three series. ‘Gosh,’ he said, excited. ‘I’ve never seen anything like it.’

‘What’s that?’ she asked as a Range Rover drove past their gaping faces. ‘It’s enormous!’

‘What’s going on?’ Jack turned on Robbie.

‘I’ve been trying to tell you,’ Robbie said crossly.

‘It’s still Hawthorn Road,’ Beth said, stepping forward, ‘but a little later.’

‘What do you mean?’ Jack took a handkerchief out of his top pocket and dabbed his upper lip.

Beth shrugged. ‘You see, we’re over sixty years ahead of you.’

‘Yes, and I’m going to win the Isle of Man TT this year.’ Jack tucked his handkerchief back into his pocket and smiled.

‘I know what it is,’ his mother turned around excitedly. ‘An American film set!’

‘No, Mum,’ Robbie said patiently. ‘It’s the twenty-first century.’

‘Twenty-what?’

‘The year two thousand and nineteen,’ Beth explained.

‘Don’t be absurd. If it were two thousand and nineteen, as you call it, I’d be dead and Robbie here would be an old man.’

‘Oh yeah!’ Beth gazed at Robbie in amazement. ‘You’re right.’

‘Come on, Dorothea, dear.’ Isabelle put out her hand and stepped onto the path. ‘This is our street. All we have to do is find our house.’

Beth, Robbie, Jack and Jessica watched as Isabelle and Dorothea walked down the street, peering into each house and jumping in from the road every time a car drove past.

‘They’re going terribly fast,’ Jack said, leaning out into the street to get a better look.

‘They can go over one hundred miles per hour,’ Robbie said.

‘Don’t, Robbie.’ Jack put a hand on the wall. ‘I feel strange.’

The skin on his cheeks had gone pale green. Beth felt sorry for him. ‘Come inside.’

Jess appeared on the stairs when they entered the hall. ‘Do you want to come up to my room?’

‘No.’ Jack stumbled into the front room. ‘I need to sit down.’

Jess and Beth followed him in. Jack sat on the low sofa, looking a darker shade of green.
